These colors are extraordinary - much like the Poppy Vase that I did around the same time. This is such a gorgeous flower - one that symbolizes romance and joy. In fact it is the official flower for a ninth wedding anniversary! When fully blooming, the bird of paradise flower resembles a tropical bird in flight. When I lived in California, I actually had these flowers growing AND blooming in my backyard!
This pot is wheel thrown, raku fired, and glazed with a very thin copper glaze. The flowers are painted with an underglaze so that they will be bright and contrast strongly with both the raku patina and the black clay. The result of this ;patina was a beautiful surprise when i pulled it out of the reduction can.
